Zingerman's Bakehouse is hiring a Night Bread Baker
to work on our team making and baking hand crafted, artisan breads
to be enjoyed all over the country!

This is a highly physical position producing over 8,000 plus loaves per day.  

This is an opportunity to work with some of this country's best artisan breads and pastries. We're looking for a special individual who is interested in a growing, changing and challenging organization that's doing pioneering work in an artisan food industry.


What are the requirements and skills needed for this job?


  • 40 hours/week.  Shifts will vary between 3pm-1am.

  • Weekend availability required (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)

  • Holiday availability required

  • Full availability in November and December (we don't take any extra time off during these months)

Performance Expectations - Essential Functions:

  • Works quickly and with a sense of urgency at all times

  • Must be adept at multi-tasking

  • Must be able to accurately scale dough

  • Must be able to hand-shape multiple types of dough

  • Must work well with others  in a team environment

  • Must be able to self manage and work independently, with little direction

  • Must be ready to work, punched in 5 minutes before the start of your scheduled shift

  • Prepares ingredients and does set-up work - setting up boards screens, pans, and other equipment in preparation for making each type of bread

  • Mixes dough for baking

  • Loads and unloads bread in the ovens

  • Monitors the proofing and baking of the breads

  • Works safely around hot ovens, heavy equipment, and sharp utensils

  • Keeps a clean and sanitary work area

  • Completes basic orientation training passport within 90 days of hire

  • Attends and participate in Bread department and Bakehouse all-staff huddles

  • Willingness to be flexible with schedule

  • Able to follow through with verbal instructions

  • Excellent attendance and punctuality


Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly during an 8 hour shift

  • Must stand, lift and bend for duration of an 8 hour shift

  • Must be comfortable with repetitive motion

  • Must be able to work in a hot and humid environment for an 8 hour shift (82-90 degrees)



The Success Patterns for this position are:

  • At least 6 months of professional baking experience preferred

  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work

  • Basic math skills required without the use of a calculator (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division - multiplication tables available)

Who are we?

Zingerman's Bakehouse is a wholesale bakery, retail shop, and baking school for home bakers. We sell to specialty food stores, cafés and restaurants in southeastern Michigan as well as selling to Zingerman's Mail Order, who ships our baked goods everywhere in the United States. We are dedicated bakers and food lovers committed to making and selling the best breads, pastries and cakes we can imagine. We are real artisan bakers, meaning we use traditional methods and flavorful ingredient to make our food.



Where are we?

Zingerman's Bakehouse is located on the south side of Ann Arbor at 3711 Plaza Drive. While there is a bus stop within walking distance, the Bakehouse is NOT located on AATA bus route.


Who are we hiring?

The Bread Department is looking for a full time Night Bread Baker.  Shifts run between the hours of 3pm-1am.  We are looking for team members who are available to work weekends and holidays. Experience baking is preferred. We are looking for individuals who consider themselves active and effective followers.


What does the job pay?

Starting pay is $12-13.50 per hour, or based on experience. 


What's the hiring process like?

You can expect to hear from us within two weeks of submitting your application either by email or phone. If selected, you may receive a phone interview, an in-person interview, and/or a trial shift (working interview).
