Zingerman's Catering & Events in Ann Arbor MI is hiring a Lead Server to work with our Service Team!  

 

Lead Server (Captain)

Our Bartenders and Servers are responsible for meeting and exceeding the expectations of all Guests. They are responsible for the setting up and maintaining of bars, beverage stations and buffets, cleaning up and breaking down at the end of events as well as serving amazing food. This is a fast-paced position that will involve constant Guest interaction and requires the ability to carry large, heavy objects on a continuous basis throughout a shift. The Captain position, a year 'round part time role, will oversee the work of Servers and Bartenders on shift while working alongside them giving great service, both internally and externally.

Saturdays are the biggest event day of the week and will be booked nearly every week. Additional event staffing will be dependent on many factors and can fall on any day or time of the rest of the week.  Shifts can be as late as 2 AM.

Schedules are always posted 2 weeks in advance.

Reports to:  Service Manager

Compensation:  $15-$20/hr

*$15/hr to start, with wage increases at completion of orientation and each training passport thereafter. 10-30 hours/week with the potential to be full time during the busy season.

Our performance expectations are:

  • Ensures event runs smoothly (Staff know their positions and what is expected, Guest experience always top priority)
  • Responsible for accurate timely execution of event details, dining rooms and public spaces, look & feel, organization and stocking as needed
  • Directs the work of Bartenders and Servers during events
  • Creates buffet & beverage displays based on Zingerman's look & feel and Guest expectations
  • Ensures all Bartender and Server Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) are followed accurately
  • Coordinates Staff breaks
  • Records all Staff's hours on off-site events and sends to the Service Manager
  • Documents any Staff performance issues with the proper form and submits to Service Manager
  • Fills out logs after each event and submits by deadline
  • Can explain the details of all food being served including possible allergens
  • Is knowledgeable of and follows food safety rules
  • Serves as a facilitator for Lean activities, working with Service Manager to train, communicate, standardize, sustain and facilitate continuous improvement, visual management and waste elimination among Front of House Staff
  • Demonstrates daily improvements and integration of Lean principles
  • Builds strong and positive working relationships with other departments, including them in the improvement activities and understanding their needs
  • Coaches Front of House Staff to excellence
  • Communicates with Service Manager and Event Planners, as needed
  • Ensures the safety of Guests and Staff Members alike through enforcement of our systems
  • Follows our service recipes while ensuring compliance with federal, state and local laws as well as all operating procedures, including handling intoxicated guests
  • Assists with developing and communicating training materials and uniform standards

In addition to our bartender expectations, which are:

  • Sets up and breaks down portable bars and beverage stations at events
  • Pours and serves beers and wines
  • Mixes cocktails
  • Serves drinks and/or food at events
  • Handles monetary transactions as needed
  • Abides by all laws in relation to serving alcohol including ensuring guests are not over-served
  • Keeps workspace clean, organized and sanitized
  • Takes direction from Service Manager and/or Event Planner while working events
  • Meets and exceed all expectations of servicing and/or bartending event
  • Responds quickly to requests from Guests, Co-workers, Supervisors and Managers while being accurate, polite and enthusiastic
  • Follows up to ensure Guest needs are met and exceeded
  • Maintains a professional image at all times through actions and appearance
  • Conducts all business in accordance with Zingerman's Guiding Principles and Bottom Lines
  • Is timely and accurate in completing all assigned responsibilities
  • Gives exceptional service to all Guests at our events
  • Completes training requirements

The Success Patterns for this position are:

  • Has experience working in the food service/hospitality industry
  • Has previous bartending experience
  • Is TIPS, TAM or ServSafe Alcohol Certified (preferred)
  • Can have a flexible schedule with an ability to work shifts on an on-call basis
  • Is able to follow directions in the moment, under time pressure, with a smile
  • Can work long shifts that require standing/walking/bending throughout shift
  • Has excellent communication skills
  • Has the ability to handle multiple tasks at one time and stay focused
  • Stays well organized with a strong attention to detail
  • Can safely lift and carry 50 pounds and move product up and down stairs

  • Able to lift 50 pounds
