Zingerman's Community of Businesses is an organization managed under the philosophy of Open Book Management.  This means that we work hard to teach our Staff how to understand the numbers and we share the numbers lavishly.  The main responsibility of a Zingerman's Accountant is to support their designated business with the day-to-day accounting, monthly financial reports/reviews, annual planning, teaching financial literacy to our Staff, and more.

Zingerman's Cornman Farms is a historic, multi award-winning event space, wedding venue and working farm in Dexter, Michigan. The 42-acre farm and its venues were restored from their 1834 foundations with the most discerning guests in mind. Featuring a beautiful exhibition kitchen, chef's garden, a classic farmhouse, four-season barn and a stunning tent pavilion, guests can enjoy the beauty of the countryside just minutes from downtown Ann Arbor.

Performance Expectations- Essential Functions:

  • Able to perform or supervise all accounting functions for the business including invoicing, printing checks, active management of A/R and A/P, assisting with payroll processing, inter-company transactions, inventory, financial reporting and all other day-to-day functions
  • Provides insightful and supportive business counsel and financial analysis to Managing Partners, other Cornman Farms Managers and Staff and colleagues in the Zingerman's Community of Businesses
  • Supervises part-time Accounting Assistant
  • Performs month-end closing activities, including account reconciliations, inventory valuation and journal entries
  • Produces financial statements, internal reporting and analytical commentary within established timeframes
  • Reconciles Square cash receipts to ensure proper revenue recognition
  • Reviews time and attendance information, make corrections and ensure timely and accurate transmission to payroll department
  • Monitors cash flow and forecast short and long-range cash requirements
  • Prepares special financial analyses and reports as requested
  • Quarterly and annual coordination with external accountants for tax filings and compilation
  • Ability to use food inventory system (Cheftec) to cost out recipes and track food and beverage inventories
  • Primary business contact for managing insurance policies and related payments with external insurance broker
  • Assists Managing Partners and Managers with annual planning
  • Provides great service to Vendors and Guests seeking financial information
  • Works with managing partners and department managers to forecast detailed financial information for the Farm and the Farm's investors on a quarterly or as needed basis.
  • Prepares annual pro forma statements for investors based on managing partners' insights on future growth expectations and major capital expenditures to add or improve revenue streams.
  • Works proactively to prevent problems and encourages cooperation toward achieving organizational goals
  • Supports Staff in resolving any financial-related issues
  • Active, on-site presence at business supported
  • Understands the operational nature of the business
  • Attends, participates and sometimes leads weekly huddles with Staff
  • Attends monthly huddles with Zingerman's Accounting Group and complies with deadlines and procedures established by the group
  • Completes Training Passports within the stated timeframes and continues to live the Guiding Principles
  • Actively supports Open-Book Management techniques and a finance culture throughout the business, collaborating with other Zingerman's businesses and Accountants to promote common practices and standards whenever possible
  • Establishes and maintains good communication and positive working relationships throughout the Zingerman's Community of Businesses, including a strong dotted-line reporting relationship with Zingerman's Service Network Financial Services
  • Supports Cornman Farms principles in Lean Management and continuous improvement
  • Creates, maintains and improves task card systems and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for office related work
  • Gives exceptional service to all employees/guests

Skills/Experience needed for this job are:

  • BA/BS in Accounting or finance; MBA or CPA preferred
  • Event venue/Food industry experience preferred
  • 3-5 years of relevant professional experience
  • Experience with Sage General Ledger Software and cash flow forecasting strongly preferred
  • Experience with continuous improvement and/or Lean concepts a plus
  • Planning and organization skills
  • Ability to analyze financial data and relate analysis to business operations
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Google Apps
  • Strong cost accounting and analytical skills and the ability to add financial rigor to dynamic environments
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
