Cornman Farms Full Time Porter

Join Zingerman's Cornman Farms as an Event Porter helping to setup, teardown and perform various operations for our amazing events!

The Event Porter is responsible for delivery of the Cornman Farms experience to all guests and the Cornman Farms Team. This is a year round position with many skill areas and opportunities to learn and share personal skills to continually improve our food, our service and our finances.  

Reports to: Managing Partner(s) and porter coach(es)

Wage:  $13 per hour

Days and Nights, Weekends, Flexible Hours Required

Our Performance Expectations:

Core Essential Functions

  • Dishwashing using automatic dishwashing machine and 3 compartment sink
  • Assisting with managing inventory of all rental items - including storage, distribution, and cleaning
  • Sweeps and mops floors. Cleaning of Property inside and out
  • Moving rental items around property safely
  • Demonstrates proper handling of food service equipment
  • Demonstrates proper handling and storage of cleaning equipment
  • Works with the team to ensuring the property is "Guest ready" and is "Close ready"
  • Works in the garden, with animals and on the grounds
  • Maintains a safe and sanitary work environment, as well as ensuring specifications are met for health inspections
  • Identifies and assists in resolving any issues that might occur during events
  • Adheres to the highest standards of service while assisting with all areas of event operations
  • Conducts all business in accordance with Zingerman's Guiding Principles
  • Demonstrates a commitment to the success of the business and team members
  • Reports to work on time and is ready to work at the start of each shift
  • Follows proper procedure for sick calls and schedule requests
  • Acts as a process engineer by following, improving and creating SOP's***
  • Gives exceptional service to all customers at our events
  • Responds quickly to requests from guests, co-workers, supervisors and managers while being accurate, polite and enthusiastic
  • Maintains a professional image at all times through actions and appearance
  • Maintains a safe and sanitary work environment
  • Attends and participates in huddles (meetings) as required or needed

***Everyone at Cornman Farms is a Process Engineer in addition to their primary role!  Process engineering involves translating the needs of the guest into tasks and then the tasks into SOP's (Standard Operating Procedures), then executing the SOPs focusing on the value added steps the guest needs and wants to reduce the 8 forms of waste.  Each use of a task and SOP focuses on continuous improvement to make these steps better for the guests, employees and the business.

The Success Patterns for the Porter position are:

  • Experience working in food service or events is a plus
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays
  • Has a flexible schedule with an ability to work shifts on an on-call basis
  • Able to work in all weather conditions (rain, snow, etc.
  • Has reliable transportation to and from work

Physical Demands:

  • Must have high levels of mobility, flexibility, dexterity, coordination and energy
  • Must be able do the essential functions of the job for long periods of time and work under heavy stress during busy times
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, and navigate a variety of terrain on the property
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.

Opportunities to Specialize

As a porter demonstrates an increase in skills, and the levels of learning advance, Porters can become certified in specific areas and become trainers of these areas.  These porters will spend more or less times doing specific tasks and SOP's in specific areas as the needs of the business require. These additional opportunities include but are not limited to:

  • Sets up space for events; arranges tables, chairs and linens meeting required level of accuracy
  • Hot Beverage brewing
  • Food serving
  • Bartending and bar backing
  • Food prepping and cooking
  • Hosting for special events
  • Overseeing and performing housekeeping for the facility
  • Maintaining and improving the appearance of the grounds
  • Maker of "Stuff" - Woodworking, Metal work, Needle and thread
  • Farming of vegetables and animal husbandry
