Home of Zingerman's Creamery!

At Zingerman's Creamery, we make and sell cheese and gelato, as well as sell American Artisan Cheeses, Beer, Wine, and Dry goods.  We are excited to be adding new items to our "menu" including made-to-order sandwiches, cheese trays, and snack packs for lunch. We will also now have guest seating, as well as a public events space.  Our expansion is exciting and we are looking for a Co-Retail Manager to join the time as we embark on this new chapter of our business!

We are located at Zingerman's Southside with Zingerman's Bakehouse, Coffee, Candy Manufactory and Zingtrain at 3723 Plaza Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48108.

We are hiring 2 Retail Assistant Managers.  (1 Internal Candidate Identified) 

Reports To:  Managing Partner

Full-Time, $13/hour, 40-45 hrs/week
$13.50 upon completion of basic orientation
$14 upon completion of a manager passport
Shifts will typically vary between 6am-9pm, including weekends and holidays.


Performance Expectations:

Essential Functions:

  • Performs all essential functions of The Cream Top Shop Staff:
    • Greets and assists all guests in the shop, giving great service and going the extra mile every time
    • Prepares made-to-order cheese sandwiches and cheese plates
    • Prepping ingredients used in menu items
    • Cuts, slices and wraps cheese for sampling and for sale
    • Prepares gelato menu items such as making sundaes, floats, malts, shakes, and sandwiches.
    • Safely handles equipment such cheese wire, knives, machine slicer, panini press and oven
    • Follows all food safety, hygiene, and sanitation guidelines
    • Answer all guest inquiries - in person or over the phone
    • Follows and completes all daily task board items
    • Cleaning bathrooms, retail shop and tasting room - including sweeping, mopping, wiping surfaces, cleaning windows, dusting, etc.
    • Cleans dishes using 3--compartment dish sink
    • Sets up and breaks down the hard cheese display daily
    • Maintains displays of products using the Zingerman's and Creamery's "Look and Feel" guidelines
    • Replenishes products in retail space
    • Actively develops and shares knowledge about our products with guests
    • Uses cash register to complete guest purchases
    • Completes all opening and closing cash paperwork
    • Participates in weekly meetings to stay up to date with the on-goings of the business
    • Follows all Zingerman's and Creamery recipes (ex. Service, customer complaints, etc.)
    • Upholds all Zingerman's Guiding Principles and Mission Statement
    • Completes Training Passport within stated time frames.
  • Regularly meets or exceeds existing annual plan goals for all three bottom lines (Great Food, Great Service, Great Finance, as shown on DOR). This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Operating costs
    • Food costs
    • Labor costs
    • Quality ratings of 90 and above
    • Purchasing targets
  • Maintains a high degree of accuracy, timeliness and consistency in all work
  • Effectively handles staff hiring, scheduling, training, employee relations, and disciplinary responsibilities
  • Provides Servant Leadership to staff, including coaching and development.
  • Leads and/or actively participates in business and department meetings
  • Leads and/or actively participates in public tastings and classes
  • Participates in Zingerman's Annual Planning process
  • Complete Zingerman's management training program as outlined.

Other Functions:

  • May participate with inventory as needed
  • May assist or present with public educational tastings
  • May have an opportunity to sample (demo) products offsite
  • Cross-training opportunities in other areas of the Creamery
  • May attend and participant in Zingerman's events and learnings

Success Patterns:

  • At least 1 year of experience as a supervisor or manager in the retail and/or food service industry
  • Experience with commercial food preparation preferred
  • Experience selling Cheese and/or Beer & Wine preferred
  • Experience in retail display and merchandising preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Basic understanding of food service math and accounting, including calculation of food costs, labor cost, costing and pricing
  • Experience in purchasing or buying preferred
  • Confident presence when speaking in front of groups of people
  • Strong computer skills including designing creative media print
  • Certified in food service sanitation preferred
  • Creative and sales oriented to effectively display and merchandise retail products
  • Able to provide great service with enthusiasm & energy throughout scheduled shift
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including long shifts, nights, weekends & holidays
